Interview With Singer & Songwriter ‘Kellie-Anne Poirier’

Tell us a little about yourself?

Sure! I’m Kellie-Anne, 18 years old. I was born in Quebec City, Canada, moved to Dubai in 2009 where I lived for 8 years and I’m now in New Jersey since 2017. I’m a singer-songwriter who’s still going to school and planning to go to college next year. I write in the soul-pop genre and most of my songs are meant to inspire people. I have a younger brother and a beautiful mini-australian shepherd.

How did you come up with your artist name?

Let’s say that I’m not the most creative person when it comes to my artist name. It’s my real name lol.

How long have you been in the music industry?

I started to sing at the age of 3. My parents gave me a guitar when I was 5 and I started to play at around that time. But it’s only when I was 10 that I started to get more serious about music. I competed in Dubai music competitions, performed live at events and I was on the Voice Kids Montreal, Canada in 2012.

How did you get started in the music business in the first place?

I would say it’s after the Voice Kids. This opportunity made me realize how much I loved music. I decided to start writing my own music in 2012, right after the Voice. Also, I was scouted by some great producers in NYC. After producing my own first song, I knew I needed to keep going.

How would you describe your latest single?

‘’My Own Solution’’ is a poignant ballad that is meant to raise awareness about eating disorders and mental health in general. The song was inspired by my own experience along with other inspiring people that I have met throughout my journey. The musical director on this song has been working with Olivia Newton-John.

When can fans expect the visuals for the single?

The video for ‘’My Own Solution’’ is already out on my brand new VEVO Page here.

Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

I’m inspired by so many amazing artists. To name a few: Julia Michaels, Zoe Weizz, Fletcher, Noah Kahan, Emily Burns, Ella Mai, Labrinth, UMI, Maisie Peters, JP Saxe, Jessie Reyes. Lewis Capaldi, James Arthur and JP Cooper.

How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

It really depends….In general, I already have an idea of the topic I want to address. Then I start by playing either my guitar or my piano in order to find a melody. And I fill in the lines. Otherwise, If an artist already has a track and asks for a collab, I’ll write based on the track that is provided to me. So I guess it depends whether I have to start the song from scratch or if there’s already a foundation to it.

What is the concept behind your forthcoming project if working on one?

I’m working on a thematic EP at the moment. I still need to work on the general idea so I’m not in a position to share at the moment.

Any plans on touring to promote your latest single?

Yes! It’s the ultimate objective if Covid allows it. I was recently signed to M2P Records and the team is currently working on booking artists and venues. Let’s just hope that the world will be in a better place.

What did you buy with your first check off music?

Oh I wish I was making enough money so I could buy something with it! So far, I was barely able to pay back all the investment. It’s a tough industry!

What are must haves when your in the studio working?

An awesome producer who understands who I am as an artist and willing to listen to my ideas, patience, time, attention to details and a dope production software/mic.

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

To be true to yourself. To follow my heart, remain humble and respect everyone’s opinion. It can only be beneficial.

Will you be collaborating with any other artists in the future?

I am always open to collaborate with great artists. My latest collaboration was with City Creed. They are awesome! My label is currently looking into artists that could be a great fit for my upcoming song. I will also feature on one of the songs of my fellow artist who co-owns the label, KS. He’s awesome too!

What artist have you had the pleasure of working with and what was it like?

As mentioned above, I recently worked with City Creed. They are doing really well on Spotify at the moment. They write in a different genre which I really appreciate. I always like to learn from other artists. I also collaborated with NuAje who is a rapper. Again, very different from what I normally write. In both cases, it was absolutely amazing and I would do it again.

Name an artist(s) that you would love to work with?

All the artists that inspire me! But If I had to pick one, I would probably say Julia Michaels.

Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

From the feedback that I receive, I would say the lyrical flow since I’m quite intense when I write lol. And my songs are very slow, emotional and not very much ‘’tic tok’’ style. That said, I’m trying to move towards a more commercial vibe so maybe my answer will be different in a few months from now.

What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc..)

So many haha! I need to get better with the structure of my songs. My writing can only get better with time. Every time I release a song, I feel there’s something else I should have done. I learn every single time. I listen to professionals, fans feedback and curators. I’m only 18 so I do have a lot to work on. If you have any insights, please let me know!

What’s your all-time favourite song?

Ohhh this is such a difficult question. I think I will say ‘’She used to be mine” by Sara Bareilles. I get goosebumps every time I hear it.

What was the last album you listened to?

You by James Arthur

Your favourite artist of all time and why?

Probably Demi Lovato for a few reasons. She has a beautiful voice that can honestly move mountains with how powerful it is. She also writes from the heart and has always been true to herself throughout her artist journey. I grew up with her on Disney channel and now see her openly discussing her mental health issues and spread awareness in her music.

Whose your favourite five artists right now?

Julia Michaels, Zoe Weiss, Jessie Reyes, Emily Burns and JP Cooper.

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

I would say Lewis Capaldi! He is phenomenal, talented and so down to earth. His songs are simple yet catchy and meaningful.

Who have been some of your favourite artists that you’ve been able to work with?

I am still hoping that I will soon have the opportunity to work with artists that inspire me.

How do you feel about the current state of music?

I feel that music is now accessible to everyone who wants to be creative. There are so many softwares available, distributors etc. Several resources are available to people who want to learn and it’s quite easy to produce in the comfort of our own home. Living in this digital world, it allows artists to unleash their creativity to the level they aspire to. It’s great!

Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

I would be grateful to simply be recognized by an award show. Of course any artists would love to be part of one. Any.

What is your main goal as far as music?

To continue to improve, write, perform and release more music. I hope to gain more fans and inspire more people. I really hope that one day I have enough fans to support me as an artist so I can keep writing and live from my music.

Who would you say your music relates to the most?

I think Demi Lovato for the reasons that I have mentioned before.

What separates you from other artists? (What’s makes you different?)

So far, I have only written about topics that touch people’s hearts. I wrote about bullying, violence in the world, living your dreams, ALS disease and eating disorders. I do realize that I might have to start writing about more relatable topics but people who like my music were touched by my lyrics. I aim to inspire and empower. I think this is what makes me different.

When your not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

I like journaling, reading books, drawing, hang out with my friends and family, walking my dog, playing volleyball and sometimes working out.

If you could work with any producer who would it be?

Trevor Brown

What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far?

Probably reaching 60,000 streams on Spotify for my song Legacy, more than 20,000 video views and attracting the support of the ALS Association. ALS disease needs more awareness and I’m glad I managed to do so with this song.

What is your dream venue to perform at?

Is Metlife exaggerated? Haha better dream big.

What’s the name of the last book you read and by whom?

We were liars by E. Lockhart

I know it’s super cliche but I really like Ryan Gosling in The Notebook. And he’s Canadian 🙂

Name someone famous who inspires you and why?
