Interview With R&B/Soul Singer And Songwriter ‘Cameen’

Tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Cameen. I’m originally from Brooklyn New York. I grew up listening to gospel, jazz and soul music; and I have a BA degree in Marketing and sociology.

How did you come up with your artist name?

My artist name ‘Cameen’ is my first name.

How long have you been in the music industry?

My start in the music industry truly started in 2002 but not professionally until 2012.

How would you describe your latest single?

I would describe my latest single “Pull Up” as actioned packed! It was written with all sports and energy driven events and activities in mind, as well as a part of a campaign ad placement for Mercedes Benz and a few other well know car brands.

Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

My inspirations in the industry are every artist/producer who is attempting to make it happen!

How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

Writing a song for me happens in so many ways. A melody may hit me in the middle of my sleep and bang. I’m in it. Or, I hear a beat that somehow hits my soul or causes a cool vibe for me. Sometimes. I simply watch certain programs that I know cause me to write vicariously through another’s situation. That tends to be fun because I generally put a twist on the outcome. Lol

Any plans on touring to promote your latest single?

Due to the current world situation. (Covid) I’m not touring. However, I’m confident that things will be back on point soon. In the meantime. I do virtual shows which are pretty fun, if set up properly.

What did you buy with your first check off music?

With my first ASCAP check, I didn’t purchase anything. I placed it in a fidelity investment account.

What are must haves when your in the studio working?

My must haves when in the studio is to have an awesome engineer/producer.

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

Best piece of advice I’ve followed. Be a sponge and learn as much about the business and never take things personal.

Will you be collaborating with any other artists in the future?

I look forward to collaborating with other artist. That’s where the real fun can be. Especially if the vibe and energy are cool.

Name an artist(s) that you would love to work with?

I would like to work with a 50 cent, Trey Songz, Donell Jones, H.E.R., Drake, Rick Ross, Rihanna and Dj Khaled!

Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

My music is liked for both the beats and the music. It depends on the type of song I’m doing.

What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc..)

I’d like to improvement on everything simply because situations change all of the time. It’s one thing to be prepared. But I like to be ready!

Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

I’d like to perform at the BET Awards Show.

What’s your all-time favourite song?

My all-time favorite song? Wow. I have so many. Lol You’re all I need by Mary J Blige and Method Man. In My Bed by Dru-Hill. Neighbors Know My Name by Trey Songz. My Peace by Jaquees. Guilty by Donell Jones. They Don’t Know by Jon B. Hey Mr by Dj-Zhane’ My uncle put me up on some of these artist!

What was the last album you listened to?

The last Albums I listened to are by Donell Jones and Tank.

Your favourite artist of all time and why?

Donell Jones and Tank are probably my favorite make artist. My favorite female artist is Faith Evans. The reasons for them both being my favorite artists is that they both have such a nice flair of soul and feel to their tracks. I truly enjoy what they do.

What is your main goal as far as music?

The main goals for my music are as follows. To tell a story that someone may need to hear and to garner placements in sync license opportunities. In addition. I’ve always wanted my music platform to be used as bridge to bring more attention to the charities that mean a lot to me. (St Jude, Shriners, Veteran, Autism, Homeless Children, Cystic Fibrosis, Breast/Prostate cancer)

What separates you from other artists? (What’s makes you different?)

My music is so different that the demographics it touches has an enormous range. Ex. Tell The Truth, Pull Up, My Wisdom, Top Shelf, Can’t Get Enough, Friday’s. The titles all say something very different, yet they may surprise the listener once they hear them. One thing I don’t do in my music is curse.

When your not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

When I’m not in the studio. I like to participate in the following activities for fun. (Soccer, basketball, mixed martial arts, shopping, clay play, Checkers, Uno, volunteering at senior citizen’s homes, attending seminars of all kinds)

If you could work with any producer who would it be?

If I could work with any producers. I would like to work with Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland, Scott Storch, Dj Khaled, Swiss Beatz.

What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far?

The biggest highlights of my career so far are: Receiving my first Grammy invitation. Receiving a participation award from St Jude. Hearing my music played for an entire summer on my local radio.

What’s your favourite athletes?

My favorite athletes are Lebron James, Kyrie Irving, Messi, Jason Tatum, Ronaldinho, Zhlatan, Floyd Mayweather.

What’s the name of the last book you read and by whom?

One of two books I’ve recently completed is ‘Hustle Harder/Hustle Smarter’ by 50 cent and ‘Be Heard By Millions and Live your destiny’ by Emerald Green Forest.

Whose your favourite actor or actress?

My favorite actors are: Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Nia Long, Larenz Tate, Taraji P Henson, The Rock, Chris Tucker, Omari Hardwick, Naturi Naughton, Joseph Sikora, Mary J Blige, Ving Rhames, Morris Chestnut, Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Queen Latifah, Luke James.

Name someone famous who inspires you and why?

Floyd Mayweather and 50 cent inspire me because they’ve both walked through hell’s kitchen during a time in their lives, as I have but never quit or stopped!

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m currently working on a new four song project. The first song is titled “ANGEL” and will be released early spring.
