Interview With Producer ‘Mills Marlee’ of Sounds From Mars

Tell us a little about yourself?

Hey what’s good I go by Mills Marlee of Sounds From MARS Production Company Worldwide, I’m a music producer out of Long Island NY, currently living in the Carolinas.

How did you come up with your artist name?

Mills is my name that I’ve been known by for years and as a kid coming up I always struggled with a rap name, around 2008 when I still had a little interest in rapping I just said I’m gonna use my name and add Marlee to it like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing, Mills being the more impulsive temperamental side of me and Marlee being the more peaceful calm positive side. I gave up wanting to rap years ago but kept the name as a Producer.

How did you get started in the music business in the first place?

Back in the day me and a few friends of mine got into recording and making beats on FL Studio, Cake Walk, Reason like in ‘02. It wasn’t anything serious and we were kids who didn’t really have the certain vision that some do so nothing blossomed from it and life went on.

I got back into it 15 years later in 2017 as a hobby to stay occupied and it went from that to actually finally taking it serious the winter of 2018.

Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

Many but most relatable to me for my venture would be the Neptune’s aka Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo for creating Star Trak the label.

What is the concept behind your forthcoming project if  working on one?

My very first project will be just a showcase of my various styles of production within the hip hop genre.

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

Be more of yourself and engage with the audience as much as possible.

Will you be collaborating with any other artists in the future?

Most definitely, I just got into collaborating with producers and so far have two tracks out with one. Looking to do some more soon.

What artist have you had the pleasure of working with and what was it like?

No one notable as of yet but the independent up and coming artists that I’ve worked with so far have been great and professional, there needs to be more of that with us who haven’t “made it” yet.

Name an artist(s) that you would love to work with?

There’s this kid named Murkemz that I want to hear over some of my beats.

His energy rhymes and flow are rare in todays society of rappers, the dude is a beast and a problem lol

What was the last album you listened to?

The Blixky Tape 2 by 22Gz

Your favourite artist of all time and why?

Nas, sounds exactly the same without sounding dated, stuck with what worked and in my opinion the formula has worked since 1994.

Whose your favourite five artists right now?

Polo G, Lil Baby, Kodak Black, Tory Lanez, Lil Durk.

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist  in your genre today and why?

I mean who else is there to mention other than Drake, he’s just the golden boy still.

How do you feel about the current state of music?

I personally love the current state of music, the sounds are amazing, the lyrical content may not be as wordy or complexed as some might like but the artists delivery just compliments the song as a whole now a days to me.

Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

I mean I guess the Grammys would be kind of cool to say I did.

What is your main goal as far as music?

Songs to reach the masses ears and to inspire any of my people to stay focused on their goals.

When your not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

I like spending time in the city, any city, I’m a fan of the metropolitan setting. We get to the city we can do whatever for fun then, eat, dance, drink, chill, smoke and vibe.

If you could work with any producer who would it be?

Alchemist!

What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far?

Selling beats online to complete strangers with only few years into it.

What’s the name of the last book you read and by whom?

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

What’s your favourite sports team and why?

Whatever NBA team Danny Green plays for, I went to high school with him and hold a sense of hometown pride when it comes to that lol.

Whose your favourite actor or actress and their best movie?

Omar Epps, In too deep.

Name someone famous famous who inspires you and why?

Unpopular answer but I would say Joe Budden, an extremely talented underdog who’s failures have been put on front street and yet never gives up despite whatever people may feel or say about him.

What can we expect from you in the future?

More fire ass beats fam.
