Interview With The World Famous DJ, Producer & Entrepreneur ‘DJ Kurupt’

Tell us a little about yourself?

Hello, amazing people and viewers of this article. This is DJ Kurupt. Since I’ve been in the music business, I have been blessed to have some of the strongest and amazing artists in the industry such as Alicia Keys, Ashanti, and Neyo, as well as upcoming artists on the scene assisting them in breaking their latest music projects and brands. I‘ve done a lot of radio work throughout the world and some music productions as well. I’ve even had an opportunity to work and feature on some really large platforms like 106th and Park as a guest DJ and judge of the weekly segment; Freestyle Friday’s featured on Sirius satellite radio and a lot more.

How did you get started in the music business in the first place?

I got started in the music business from being around the music of course and really being around friends and other creators that were also in the business as well. I started to learn rapidly what the music business was all about. It was something that my attention stayed on for a long while.

When can fans expect the visuals for the single?

Expect a lot of creativity for sure.

What is the concept behind your forthcoming project if working on one?

The concept behind my upcoming project is being the best version of me.  So, I call it “The Mixtape Hero” and that I am. I can and have done many mixtapes that have gone worldwide and people from everywhere loves them so much I still get asked about them today. I appreciate that.

Any plans on touring to promote your latest single?

Yes, I do plan to hit the road on promoting my new music of course.

What did you buy with your first check off music?

My first check off of music I bought more equipment, records and supplies for me to continue working. Back then I felt I would have been in this music field for a lot longer, so I continued to invest in it.

What are must haves when you’re in the studio working?

Water, Pineapple Ciroc, and Gummy bears candy. HaHa

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

The best piece of advice I can say and that I actually follow is to be yourself.

Name an artist(s) that you would love to work with?

Timbaland and Kalani with DJ Kurupt on the production.

Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

I’d say for the beats. I feel my beats are really creative and anyone can vibe to them.

What was the last album you listened to?

The last album I’ve listened to was French Montana – They Got Amnesia

Your favourite artist of all time and why?

Hands down to me is Ms Mary J Blige. Yeah, she does for me musically because at any given moment and or place you can throw on a Mary J Blige song and get the results needed for the occasion.

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

To me right now I’d say Drake and Kanye West plus Lil Baby are influential for many reasons each however, the main reasons are their consistency level is most inspiring.

Who have been some of your favourite artists that you’ve been able to work with?

On the mixtape level I really enjoyed working with Drag-on of the Ruff Ryders, let me tell you why. We recorded that mixtape while out on the street doing other promotions and we met up in NYC and had to stop at a local subway shop or Blimpie’s to charge up and get power to the machine to record. I was determined to get the work done and honestly a lot of my mixtape production had gone like that. Example: The 50 Cent and G-Unit mixtapes I’ve done we recorded in a hotel, I even remember taking my portable recorders out with me to Puerto Rico and recording in the hotel with several artists out there, the hustle never stops.

How do you feel about the current state of music?

I do feel it is still good and quality production and sounds in today’s state of music which is a good thing. Imagine how far we’ve come from the beginning days when we all heard our first sounds of music and fell in love with it.  Aw man the good sounds of music are a feel good thing and this is why I love to create music.

Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

Soul train awards would be good for me and them (laughs) Yeah, I would like to DJ at a soul train award. Let’s put that on the list to accomplish.

What is your main goal as far as music?

My main goal in music is to be remembered for things I’ve created of course. And also, to be remembered as a man that really never gave up.

What separates you from other artists? (What makes you different?)

I feel what makes me different is the way I create. I feel like the way I create is unique and different as it should be, of course otherwise, I’d just fit in with the bunch and not stand out.

When you’re not in the studio, what do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

Working out at the gym, or home relaxing or even out for wings and a few billiards games

If you could work with any producer who would it be?

That producer would be Dr Dre.

What’s your favourite sports team and why?

New England Pats because I like winners HaHa. That was funny but although I love a good game, I do not find the time to watch much of it lately, however, I am a fan of a good game and in all sports.

Who’s your favourite actor or actress and their best movie?

My favourite actors and actresses are Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Samuel Jackson, and Julie Roberts. Of course, there are lots more but this is good for now Lol!

What can we expect from you in the future?

Expect more projects created from the best of me. Get ready for the new EP from DJ Kurupt titled “The Mixtape Hero” And honestly let’s just focus on that right now. (HaHa) Thank you.
