Interview With Multi-Genre Singer & Songwriter ‘Hannah Strumner’

Tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Hannah Strumner, I am a songwriter-singer from the United States. I am 20-years-old and I have been songwriting since the age of six. I love writing in all different genres, from rock to country!

How did you come up with your artist name?

Haha, I am lucky that Hannah is already my name! If I could change my name though, it would be cool to be called “Kelsey.”

How long have you been in the music industry?

I have been in the industry since the age of 13 on and off, but really got serious about it around two years ago in 2020 when COVID-19 hit and I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes and I figured we never know what happens tomorrow, so it is best to chase our dreams.

How did you get started in the music business in the first place?

I was inspired to do so by looking up to different artists like Taylor Swift. I started to do research, and found out one doesn’t always need a label to get into the industry, someone can be an independent artist as well!

How would you describe your latest single?

My latest single is very emotional and raw, just like my album! My album does have some happy tunes as well like “Brown Eyes” and “Lost Inside my Mind” which are a lot more upbeat compared to my album’s single “Are You Ready to Let Go” which features Sam Henry.

When can fans expect the visuals for the single?

There is a music video out for my single, and there will be a bunch of lyric videos out for my album itself. I am super excited about the lyric videos as there is an animated one as well and I have never had that done before! Check out my latest music video to ‘Are You Ready To Let Go’ featuring Sam Henry here.

Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

My inspirations in the music industry are Billy Joel, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and Bobbie Gentry!

How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

Writing a song really varies every time. Sometimes it is a sit down thing where I want to write a song, and other times (which is usually the case) I will come up with a little idea and record it in my voice memos.

What is the concept behind your forthcoming project if working on one?

The concept behind my album project is that one doesn’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. This was because of my Type One Diabetes diagnosis and how unexpected it was.

Any plans on touring to promote your latest single?

I do want to go on tour soon, and especially visit a whole bunch of other countries.

What did you buy with your first check off music?

I bought studio time as I am an independent artist!

What are must haves when your in the studio working?

My water, My tea and Chicken Nuggets.

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

The best advice would be that you are the only one who can get yourself out there. One has to work hard in order to be in the industry and you cannot give up when you get rejected or things don’t quite go your way.

Will you be collaborating with any other artists in the future?

I really want to collaborate with other artists in the future and I have a lot of artists in mind for sure!

What artist have you had the pleasure of working with and what was it like?

I have worked with Sam Henry and it has been super awesome! We recorded my song “Are You Ready to Let Go” together and Sam was very professional when it came to recording but made the experience fun as well!

Name an artist(s) that you would love to work with?

I would love to work with Peyton Shay as she is an amazing artist!

Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats  or for the lyrical flow and content?

I think people like my lyrical flow, and the catchiness I apply to my songs and also my song’s meaning too.

What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc…)

I really want to get into writing some classical pieces as well, but I want to improve more with music theory on the piano as I am someone who usually plays by ear and not by reading notes.
