Interview With Singer & Songwriter ‘Nicole Slack Jones’

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m a New Orleans born singer-songwriter. I’m the second child of 5 to the proud parent of Philip Slack Sr. and Mother Judy Slack. My Father was a great Gospel saxophonist and Mother a gospel singer and choir director. Most of my musical skilled were mastered in the Pentecostal church. (Church Of God In Christ) this is where I got my start. Although I wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music growing up. I eventually found my place when I decided to remove myself from other’s boxes. I realized music was my real passion at an early age. So as I continued to grow leading up to where I am now creating my original music after singing cover songs for years and traveling Europe performing an headlining over 700 concerts. Now I get to tell my story. This is why I started with original titles ā€œI Am Freeā€ and my newest single ā€œI Can Only Be Meā€.

How did you come up with your artist name?

I decided I want to use my biological name instead of creating an ā€œartists nameā€ My feeling is that I want people to know me for who I am and I didn’t want to create a name that had no meaning. I come from a family who is rooted in music and I want to represent my family name as well as myself and be proud of it.

How long have you been in the music industry?

I have been in the music Industry since I came into this world. Doctors told my mom from the day I came out screaming, I had already developed my lungs for the stage šŸ˜‚

How did you get started in the music business in the first  place?

I actually got my start singing gospel music in the Pentecostal church (C.O.G.I.C.) from the age of 5. Gospel music was all I knew and was allowed to sing which I love. At the same time I felt my voice was not being exposed enough. My dream was to share it with the world. So I would sneak and listen to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey because I felt Connected to their music. they were huge inspirations for me. After graduating high school, I took it on professionally because I was always excited about my passion for music . I wanted to get out the box of only being a ā€œchurch singerā€ so I started learning pop songs and other Motown classics to do shows at the Casino in New Orleans and several other private venues. Then I took on singing as special guest for the New Orleans Jazz Fest with a local band. In 2008 is when I got my start in France and Europe. After recording a gospel cover album, I began headlining major festivals and churches.
