Interview With The Inspirational & Motivating Rap Artist ‘Tragically Magic’

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m an independent artist based out of Cape Cod, MA. I focus on motivational and storytelling with my work with the goal of inspiring and motivating everyone that listens.

How did you come up with your artist name?

Growing up, I was given the name “Black Magic” due to all the misfortune that seemed to gravitate to me. As time went on, “Magic” was what really stuck with me over the years. Going into the music industry, I wanted to keep the name “Magic” but I knew it needed something more to it. Telling a story from my past, someone had said to me “How tragic” and it hit me there, “Tragically Magic”.

How long have you been in the music industry?

As of now, I’m going into my third year in the industry.

How did you get started in the music business in the first place?

Originally, I was a boxer and an extremely determined one too. I trained too hard and crushed both my feet and ankles to the point I couldn’t fight anymore. It took time to mentally recover from losing the ability to keep pursuing what I love but while I was recovering, music kept me going. I realized if music could have that effect on me, I could create music myself with the intention of doing exactly that.

How would you describe your latest single?

My latest single “Time” is a comparison between the positive and negative views of the passing of time. I made it to really show different perspectives on something everyone is familiar with but also show what surviving and enduring so many tragedies can do to someone. It’s certainly not a track to relax to, but one to feel and learn from.

When can fans expect the visuals for the single?

The visuals for Time came out May 25th of this year, 3 days after the single was released on all platforms. The visual for my next single “Lost” is releasing the same day as the audio on Dec 10th, 2021.

Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

My biggest influences are Dax and J.Cole. They really are the embodiment of talented writing with a purpose and making an impact.

How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

Once I have an idea for a song or a possible concept, I try to find a repetitive beat to have playing in the background. The beat really is just so as I write, the tempo and bar structure stays the same throughout. I’ll write the song from beginning to end straight through until it’s finished, try it on a few different beats, and then consider it studio ready.

What is the concept behind your forthcoming project if working on one?

My Collab project with Drastik Measures is called “The Path”. The concept is that the path to greatness has its hardships, has its ups and downs but we’re still here, still fighting, and we’ll make it to the end.

Any plans on touring to promote your latest single?

I do have plans for some performances with Drastik for our upcoming single and project. Touring I’m saving for when my next solo album is completed.

What did you buy with your first check off music?

Honestly my first, second, third and so forth I’ve put right back into my music. From the beats, to the video sets and teams behind me, I’ve been pushing off my own personal gain to make the craft better for my current and future fans.

What are must haves when your in the studio working?

Definitely that winning attitude. The engineer and I both got to be in the mindset that we are about to create something life changing before that record button gets hit.

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

“Stay consistent” is probably the best advice you can get and it’s shown immensely over the years.

Will you be collaborating with any other artists in the future?

Absolutely. My collaboration with Drastik Measures is only the beginning of many more collaborations to come.

What artist have you had the pleasure of working with and what was it like?

Working with Drastik on these tracks has been amazing. It has inspired and motivated me more and more with each track we’ve hit the booth with and it really feels like we have life changing tracks like nothing else we’ve ever done before.

Name an artist(s) that you would love to work with?

Dax and J.Cole are my inspirations and my most hoped for collaborations. The impact and vibe we could create is one that would make waves worldwide.

Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

It’s really a combo of both but I know my lyrics have a much longer lasting effect on the people who listen.

What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc…)

Due to covid striking amidst my first year, my stage presence has been very slim. With the coming years I plan to fix and improve on that.

What’s your all-time favourite song?

All time favourite is “Only God Can Judge Me” by 2pac. A lot of songs recently come close but they aren’t a true classic like Pac.

What was the last album you listened to?

The last album I listened to was Polo G’s HOF 2.0. It just dropped so I had to see what’s new and keep up to date with artists today.

Your favourite artist of all time and why?

All time artist is J.Cole. Never heard a single track from him that wasn’t a hit and they all have meaning to them in the best of ways.

Whose your favourite five artists right now?

J.Cole, Dax, Polo G, Morray, and Joyner Lucas

In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Influential is definitely J.Cole. He’s now helped sway an ill-fated sentence and started many artists doing freestyles before a release in a year with little effort from him.

Who have been some of your favourite artists that you’ve been able to work with?

So far, I’ve worked with Drastik and on the production side, Lexnour. Both are incredible and have an atmosphere that makes you want to push yourself to do more and be better at what you do.

How do you feel about the current state of music?

Music in recent years has really started to improve and become more intricate. Makes me proud to be in the industry among so many other great artists.

Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

Being able to perform at the BET awards or Grammys I’m sure is any artists dream, really puts yourself onto a whole new level.

What is your main goal as far as music?

My main goal is really focusing on the fans that relate. I’m creating for them to give them hope and inspire them to never quit.

Who would you say your music relates to the most?

People who know pain, who’ve had dark days or have struggled to get where they are today are probably the most relatable to my songs.

What separates you from other artists? (What’s makes you different?)

I’m an artist that doesn’t fixate on violence or substance abuse or anything like that. I’m here to motivate, to inspire people to chase their dreams and prove their haters wrong along with knowing on their hard days they aren’t alone.

When your not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

I’m my off days, I spend time meditating to really relax and refocus myself and read often so my mind is constantly being worked.

If you could work with any producer who would it be?

Lexnour without a doubt. Great energy, amazing talent and skill and I gotta say, I’ve never heard a single beat that wasn’t hit ready from him.

What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far?

The biggest highlight has got to be having Neyo feature my single “Time” on one of his mixtapes the same week I dropped the track.

What is your dream venue to perform at?

My dream venue is headlining at TD Garden in Boston, MA. It’s close to home and graced by so many legends that it’s awe inspiring to me.

What’s the name of the last book you read and by whom?

The last book I read was The Gunslinger, by Stephen King.

Whose your favourite actor or actress and their best movie?

Michael B Jordan and Creed, both the first and second one. Still my favourite movies today.

What can we expect from you in the future?

After “The Path” with Drastik Measures, expect a lot more collaborations and singles from me while my next album is being perfected.

Where can the fans check out for your music?

I’m currently found on all platforms. Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon, IHeartRadio, you name it, I’m there.
